The building where the hotel and cafe bar are located dates from the year 1862.
The history of the family Grau Fabregas starts with the opening of Bar Centric in the year 1842. This cafe bar was inaugurated by Mr Grau parents.
In the early twentieth century Barcelona establishment had no official name and was then, when it created a law allowing the use of a trade name.
As per the name of the cafe bar"Centric" , this comes from a popular request, due to its good location. Long time ago, the streets were pedestrian and the Centric bar had an outdoor terrace. It was very well known in Barcelona the vermouth and homemade potato chips made by Mercedes, which owned the bar( Mr Grau´s mother).
During all these years, this bar has been a meeting point of people from the neighborhood as artists. The Centric Bar also part of the literature and authors such as Robert Ball (Chilean writer) and Josep Pl (writer cataln) have referred to this bar in one of his works.
currently remains a bar characteristics of Ciutat Vella, cosmopolitan and entraable at once. Dolce Gabana ads as short films and music videos have been recorded in the downtown bar. Recently recorded a sequence of a Spanish-Chilean films entitled: 199 recipes for happiness
As for the hotel called Hosteria Grau, located in the same building, opened in the year 1941. In the thirties, the ground floor where the reception is located was a coal shop and Grau-Fabregas famila lived on the first floor.
The bombing of the Spanish civil war (1936-1939) did not affect the building and some of the neighbors tell that there is a hiding place in the basement that was used as a refuge in these times of war(by the breakfast room).We have never found it but keep trying...
Over time, hotel was converted into a guesthouse
The meaning of the shield is creation of Sr.Grau .There are the names and the year of inauguration of centric bar. Also you can see the coat of Barcelona, ??like a bunch of grapes symbolizing the sale of wine. Lastly a carriage stands on representing a stop in a guesthouse. This shield is the Union of the two businesses, both as Hosteri grau and Centric Bar.
Mr. Grau began this business and passed on to his son Felix Grau Torrents (who was, at that time,living in New York) and his daughter in law Lidia Robles. In 1993 he reformed and expanded. Felix died of cancer 11 years ago. he had only 52. Currently the hotel is runned by his wife(Lidia) and his daughter (Monica) The last renovations have been in 2011, with the elevator/lift construction. All the renovations made in this building keep the old style catalan .
